Channel 5 Cleveland and Fox 8 News Covers Book Policy and Interview Board President Maggie Cook
Some community members would like books removed from our school libraries. Maggie Cook proposed a policy that gave parents the power to control what their child checks out in the library. Parents are automatically emailed when a child takes out a book. If a parent opts into our restricted check out system, the book is put on hold until the parent signs a permission slip for the child to take out the book. This eliminates the need for parents to worry about students reading content that they don't want their children to read and also protects the freedoms for other students and parents to have access to materials they find important to them. This new policy replaced a policy that did not respect parental rights and did not solve concerns. The policy it replaced was not feasible and resulted in multiple book challenges which divided our community. Since this policy was adopted there have not been book challenges.
